In the six months since Prime Minister Harper and President Obama launched the Beyond the Border Action Plan, the United States and Canada have been working very closely and seriously together to create a new framework for U.S.-Canada cooperation on security and economic issues. Part of that undertaking includes changes in the way we manage our common border. Tangible improvements that translate into increased efficiency; improved security; savings for companies; and less time at the border for individual travelers.

Canada and the United States announce air cargo security improvements

Canada and the United States announced that both governments have agreed to the mutual recognition of, and cooperation on, air cargo security in both countries. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Mr. James D. Nealon, Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy on behalf of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator John Pistole, made the announcement.

Event: “What Does the Canada-U.S. Beyond the Border Action Plan Mean for Security and Economic Prosperity? The Canadian and U.S. Perspectives”

Prime Minister Harper and President Obama agreed last February on a new initiative aimed at developing a shared vision for perimeter security and economic competitiveness. Following several months of consultations and preparation by groups of officials in both capitals, the two leaders announced a detailed action plan on December 7 setting out specific goals and objectives to be met over the next five years. David Heyman and Paul MacKinnon are two of the principals engaged in bringing the “Beyond the Border” action plan to fruition. They will use this opportunity to explain their current priorities and work program. Discussion, based on Chatham House rules, will follow their presentation.
